I began my career in the industry when as a 16 year old I joined A.C. Lloyd Limited, a building and civil engineering contractor based in the Midlands. My early practical experience was complemented by part-time studies to qualify as a Quantity Surveyor. I gained considerable all round knowledge of Civil Engineering and general construction at A.C. Lloyd which was an “all round” company, undertaking medium size jobs ranging from small building projects to total build packages. I spent my initial days in the office and this enabled me to acquire a “birds eye” view of the whole operation. I then worked “outside”, progressing to become a Supervisor. I was then head hunted by Asfare Limited in 1982.
Asfare at the time was a significant road-surfacing contractor with ambitions to expand its activity into road planing. I started my duties with Asfare as a Surfacing Supervisor, taking charge of gangs engaged in carrying out surfacing contracts ranging from estate roads to main public highways. In 1983, Asfare purchased its first planing machine and I identified a personal bias for planing and moved to this activity in 1987. I took charge of outside supervision as well as a certain amount of office work.
I progressed gradually to all duties relating to planing, including customer liaison, quoting, planning of work and agreeing accounts.
appointed Manager of the planing section and my progression culminated with my appointment as Director in 1991 and then Managing Director in 1993.
Power Plane Ltd was started in 1996 with Ray Turner and myself, with Guy Stripp joining us in the first year of operation.
I am the treasurer of the Association Planing Contractors (APC) having been a past chairman. I am married and have five children, two girls and three boys, in my "spare time" I am a beaver leader with the scouts and spend the rest of my time attending out of school sporting activities which the children are involved in.
